- "Top-Up" - mental activity, that can monitor and impose its goals on the subcritical machinery
- Peak of automaticity can be seen when expertise pays off in effortless attention to high demand.
- The topmost levels become a mental game: your mind state determines how well you can focus, and so how well you can do. The more you relax and trust in bottom-up moves, the more you free your mind to be nimble.
- Recipe go a screwup
- Prefrontal Cortex: when activated you start thinking about how were doing, how to do what were doing, how to do what were doing, or, worse, what not to do, giving over some control to circuits that know how to think and worry, but not how to deliver the move itself.
- Flubs: escalate degree we are distracted, stressed, or otherwise mentally burdened. Mental prime increases likelihood of mistake.

- " We attend to the present, what's needed for success now, but this is bad for farsighted goals, which are not given the same priority in the mind. Future focus becomes a luxury, waiting for current needs to be taken care of first." (Elke Weber)

Network Thoughts

I had a friend that asked to see if we could sit down for 45mins and help him out get some training. It turned out to be Primerica. Which doesn't seem all that bad but is based on an older style of network marketing.

Just last night or this morning I got a message from a guy on Facebook asking to see if I was interested in making some extra income on the side. Says he's a recruiter for a global company. Looking into his profile and things he seems fairly legit. The strange thing is he's along the lines on network marketing but may use different companies and things. I saw something about Paycation that he mentioned. Looked interesting and another network marketing where people purchase vacations under you site and you get compensated.

So everything seems to be going together in a sense. I'm curious if this is an opportunity that I should test out. Make a step towards financial freedom. Are the stars aligning or am I just perceiving this to be so?

I can see in myself that it would be helpful for me to break out of my shell. I'm looking for ways to do so. Thinking about toastmasters and other things. I know relations are very important and being a competent well spoken person.

How can I break the cycle to get free and realize the potential out there?

It won't hurt to try. I have tickets for a Primerica event that could be overwhelming but helpful. Also I will message that guy back and see what happens.

Don't be afraid, nothing is impossible, innovate out. The Obstacle is The Way.

Power Questions - (book) (1hr 20mims)
- "Could I travel on that beam of light? Could I reach or exceed the speed of light?" (Einstein)
- "I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious." (Einstein)
- Rather than offering advice Peter Drucker would pose simple but penetrating questions such as, "What business are you really in?" "What do your customers value most?"
- "To be , or not to be, that is the question?" (Shakespeare)
- Power Questions - the questions we select have the power to give new life to your conversations in unexpected and delightful ways. They are powerful tools to get directly to the heart of the matter. They are the keys to opening locked doors.
- "If I am to speak 10 minutes, I need a week for preparation. If 15 minutes, three days. If half an hour, two days. If an hour, I am ready now." (Woodrow Wilson)
- "Ah, but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now." (Bob Dylan)
- "Once you've made your pitch, or you ask a question, shut up!" (DeWitt)
- Chpt 2: "What would you like to know about me/us?"
- when someone asks "tell me about your company?" Or "Tell me about yourself?"
- Clarify what they would like you to talk about.
- When to Use: When you are asked a general question that could potentially require a long answer.
- Follow Up Questions: "Does that answer your questions?" "is there anything else you'd like me to talk about?"
- Chpt 3: "What do you think?"
- Open ended questions
- "The greatest compliment was paid to me today. Someone asked me what I thought and actually attended to my answer." (Thoreau)
- Devout Listening - listening intently
- asking questions and then listening put you in control
- People want to be heard!
-Developed your reputation as a great listener. Draw others out and show you care about them by asking.
- "Many a man would rather you heard his story than granted his request." (Philip Stanhope, the fourth earl of Chesterfield)
- The listen. Listen aggressively. Listen attentively. Listen to the silence. Listen with your eyes. Listen!
- "The seeds of progress are rooted in the unhappy person. It's the pebble in the shoe that causes you to take notice."
- When to Use: When ever you are discussing a dilemma or planning a course of future action. After you have shared your views or presented a proposal. When someone comes to you with a problem.
- Follow Up: "What has influenced your thinking about this the most?" "Are there any other perspectives I ought to be aware of?"
- Chpt 4: "Are they ready to buy?"
- First Question That Someone Will Buy: "Does the buyer have a significant problem or opportunity that the solution addresses?" No need, No sale
- Second Question: "Does the buyer own the problem?"
- Third Question: "Does the buyer have a healthy dissatisfaction with current offerings or with the rate of their improvement?" No dissatisfaction? No sale.
- Fourth Condition: Trust that you are the right person for the job.
- Fourth Question: "Does the buyer trust that you are the best person for the job?" No trust? No sale.
- You must be determined and committed. Before you exhaust yourself trying to get the sale, you must ask the question, "Are they ready to buy?"

Focus - Daniel Goldman (book) (1hr)
- Erving Goffman
- "Away" - a gesture that tells another person "I'm no interested" I'm what's going on here and now.
- "Continuous Partial Attention"
- What are our distractions costing us?
- We have an attention crisis on our hands.
- "Information consumes the attention of its recipients. Hence a wealth of information creates a poverty of attention." (Herbert Simon)
- Part 1
- Bela Bartok - string quartets
- Selective Attention: the neural capacity to beam in on just one target while ignoring a staggering sea of incoming stimuli, each one a potential focus in itself.
- "the sudden taking possession by the mind, in clear and vivid form, of one of what seems several simultaneously possible objects of trains of thought." (William James)
- Two Types of Distraction: Sensory and Emotional
- operates in the prefrontal regions
- Richard Davidson names focus as one of a handful of essential life abilities
- "Phase-locking" - synchronized state with the object of that beam of awareness
- Nicholas Carr - "deep reading"
- "tide of technological revolution so captivate, bewitch, dazzle, and beguile man that calculative thinking may someday come to be....the only way of thinking." (Martin Heidegger)
- Deep thinking demands sustaining a focused mind. The more distracted we are, the more shallow our reflections; likewise, the shorter our reflections, the more trivial they are likely to be.
- Multitasking is false. Rather than having a stretchable balloon of attention to deploy in tandem, we have a narrow, fixed pipeline to allot. Instead of splitting it, we actually switch rapidly. Continual switching saps attention from full, concentrated engagement.
- When we coordinate what we see and what we know, our efforts in tandem multiply our cognitive wealth.
- Collective Intelligence

Springs a Coming

As spring creeps in it is beautiful to see the new blossoms blooming coloring the trees with beautiful pastel colors. It reminds me of the  warmth to come and the beauty that is to arise out of winters dreary days.

The weather is a changing. Winds are shifting carrying along chilly breezes to be displaced elsewhere, bringing new warmth

Days are becoming longer, allowing for opportunity every new day.

Just as the seasons life too has its winter, spring, summer, and fall. Recognizing these patterns instills the faith that out of darkness comes light. Stay strong and hold on long for if we are not careful the ride will be over sooner than we thought.

Watch and be open to the beauty as well as the ugliness present in the world and life. It way not be in our favor but is the essence of existence, breath in deep life's gifts, for they too shall pass.

The Art of Charm - Jordan Harbinger (podcast) (60mins)
- Episode 388: Gretchen
How you successfully create a habit may not work for someone else, and vice versa.
"Habits are a good servant and a bad master." -Gretchen Rubin
The Cheat Sheet:
- Why does the habit of making your bed matter? Is there a link between happiness and minimalism? What's the biggest myth of all according to Gretchen? What's the strategy of other people and why is it so crucial? How to know if you are an abstainer or a moderator. And so much more...
- If you've tried to change habits in the past but haven't succeeded you'll want to hear what today's guest has to say on the matter. Gretchen Rubin is the three-time best-selling author who has made a study of happiness and habits.
- We talk about her books, including her book Better Than Before: Mastering the Habits of Everyday Life, and the finer points of habit-formation and happiness  on episode 387 of The Art of Charm.
More About This Show:
- Invariably Gretchen Rubin finds herself discussing habits with the people she meets, it's one of her favorite subjects. On today's episode you'll hear simple and effective habits to help you create a calmer, more orderly home. You'll also hear the strategy of the treat and loopholes we sometimes use to justify breaking a good habit.
- A simple and effective way to create a calmer, more orderly home is to use the one-minute rule: if it takes a minute or less, do it right away! When you get home, put your jacket away instead of dropping it wherever it lands. Your home will feel orderly and so will your mind.
- When it comes to forming everyday habits one effective strategy she recommends is the strategy of the treat. Choose a treat that's good for you and healthy and adds to your life, like buying new music every week if you're a music lover or lighting candles in your home.
-The treat needs to be something you do for yourself consistently, think of it as a way to refortify and take care of yourself rather than a reward you have to obtain. If you are taking care of yourself and staying restored you will be more likely to maintain other healthy habits because good treats bolster your will power and self-discipline.
- Gretchen also highlights a few of the loopholes we use to get out of "being good", these are rationalizations we make in the moment to break a healthy habit. There are over twenty she talks about in her book, Better Than Before: Mastering the Habits of Our Everyday Life, but one we discuss today is the self-actualization loophole.
- This is where the rationalization that it's ok to have this piece of cake because we need to enjoy life or we tell ourselves "you only live once". If you're using that train of the thought ask yourself how you'll feel about your decision later: will you feel good or will you not even remember that piece of cake? If you'll feel good and it will create a positive memory for you, then go for it. If it won't, then don't do it.
- We also talk about how to frame your treats, why we can't always create habits (even the fun ones!) and the power of accountability in creating last change. Thanks to Gretchen for sharing her wisdom and special thanks to you for being here! We'll see you next time on The Art of Charm.

-The Unification of Meaning In Life Themes
- When a person's psychic energy coalesces into a life theme, consciousness achieves harmony.
- Authentic vs Inauthentic
Authentic - choices are free, and makes a personal decision based on a rational evaluation of his experience.
Inauthentic - chooses because they are what she feels ought to be done, because they are what everybody else is doing.
- Discovered vs Accepted
Discovered -  when a person writes the script for her actions out of personal experience and awareness of choice.
Accepted - when a person simple takes on a predetermined role from a script written long ago by others.
- A reaction to a great personal hurt suffered in early life - what matters is the interpretation that one places on the suffering.
- To find purpose in suffering one must interpret it as a possible challenge
- Develop Appropriate Skills - to confront the challenges at the root of what has been wrong in his personal life.
- Dissipative Structure - the ability to draw order from disorder
- The Challenge Becomes Generalized to other people, or to mankind as a whole - whatever solution found to the problems would benefit not only himself, but many others besides.

- Join all experience into a meaningful pattern (Chpt 10)
- "It is not just a matter of losing a few extra pounds. It is a matter of losing the chance to have a life worth living."
- "the primary reason it is so difficult to achieve happiness centers on the fact that, contrary to the myths mankind has developed to treasure itself, the universe was not created to answer our needs. Frustration is deeply woven into the fabric of life. And whenever some of our needs are temporarily met, we immediately start wishing for more. This chronic dissatisfaction is the second obstacle that stands in the way of contentment."
- "To deal with these obstacles, every culture develops with time protective devices --- religious, philosophies, arts, and comforts ---- that help shield us from chaos. They help us believe that we are in control of what is happening and give reasons for being satisfied with our lot." It eventually wears out and no longer provides the spiritual sustenance it once did.
- "natural processes do not take human desires into account. They are deaf and blind to our needs, and thus they are random in contrast with the order we attempt to establish through our goals."
- "The universe is not hostile, nor yet is it friendly. It is simply indifferent." (J. H. Holmes)
- "No great improvements in the lot of mankind are possible, until a great change takes place in the fundamental constitution of their modes of thought." (J. S. Mill)
- How we feel about ourselves, the joy we get from living, ultimately depend directly on how the mind filters and interprets everyday experiences.
- we must learn to achieve mastery over consciousness itself

And it should be tinted paper, that it may not be rubbed out, but change the old (when full) for a new one; since these things should not be rubbed out but preserved with great care; for the forms, and positions of objects are so infinite that the memory is incapable of retaining them, wherefore keep these (sketches) as your guides and masters.

Circles

My mind is spiraling, and not in a good way. I once thought I had  a hold on things and my path marked out. Yet I am still amongst the waves tossed about. Every new wave taking me a different direction. Although there seems a general direction there is still no exact focus. I circle several ideas drawing a desire to go forth. Something invisible stands in the way. Mentally there is doubt. How do I overcome this doubt? It has been many months of me stirring up focus but is there something being accomplished? Am I performing a flurry of activities with no real end in sight? It all takes time but how much? I am moving takes steps in a direction, is that not good enough? I am delusional about time and the necessary commitment. My mind roams the pastures picking up anything that looks shiny, only to drop within hours to days. A select few have stuck with me. Yet again comes the underlying esteems issues. One day I have it, one day I don't. Lost in the swell of things. I am my own worst enemy, the mind ruminating and spiraling downwards towards self sabotage. I am not the shocked dog that submits with helplessness. I will break through the surface to find the sweet air which fills my void. It can be done, it will be done. I still can fight. The mind is mischievous thing and without reigns runs wild.

The Sad Sad Day My Bicicleta Went Missing

Saturday March 7th between noon and 6pm my bicycle went missing. It was a sad sad day. My wife and I had gone to Boise to look at purchasing a bike for herself. She had been riding a vintage bike, single speed, with extra rusty wheels and a few missing spokes. Due to its age we were concerned how long it might last. She had been thinking about a new bike for a while, something with gears and more comfort. That day we found just the bike for her an Electra salmon pink with turquoise wheels and white seat and grips. She oogled like hell over it. It was cute. She had her mind set and by god if anyone were to interfere she'd cut them. After getting her bike all packed up we made our way home. Oh and don't forget the matching turquoise basket. When we arrived home we were pumped to go on a bike ride. We pulled up and gathered some junk and clutter getting ready to take things up to apartment. As we walked up something seemed funny and couldn't quite put my thumb on it. Then my wife commented "where is your bike?" Then it dawned on me, my fucking bike was gone. My normal parking place was empty next to the steps leading up to the door. Upon further examination I found that the cable of my bike lock had been severed. Again I will say it was a sad sad day. I put my heart into my bike. A lot of time and energy my invested into making it what it is. Blood and sweat was shed but enjoyed. I had made a bike I was proud of. The only fixie in town and very distinct. If only I were to find my little Peugeot.

Tai Lopez is no stranger to the London Real hot seat. He believes that most of the success issues that people have, as well as most social issues the world has, could find some solution in getting away from chewing gum entertainment and upping the consumption of history’s genius. To recap on who exactly Tai is - for those who may have missed him first time round - he’s an investor, entrepreneur, author and renaissance man. As a self-made millionaire by his 20s, he has started and overseen the foundation of 20 multi-million dollar companies. He’s formed a business mentorship program and is perhaps best known for his ’67 Steps To The Good Life’ - a distilled and compact course that explores the finest lessons on success, drawn from 8000 years of human thought.Tai also runs the world’s second biggest book club, only to Oprah’s, from his home in the Hollywood Hills. On his search for the Good Life, he’s come to seek knowledge from ancient and modern minds - reading one book a day! At last count his personal library contained over 5000 books. It’s fair to say he likes to read, and the results speak for themselves. Most of us struggle to read just one book every few months, by the end of today’s episode this may change. Enjoy!
